Mary McLeod Bethune, the daughter of former slaves, opened the first school for African American girls in October 1904 in Daytona Beach, Florida. The school known as Daytona Literary and Industrial School for Training Negro Girls, was opened at a time when many African American children received little or no education. In 1923, Bethune’s school merged with Cookman’s Institute in Jacksonville, FL a school for boys. The school became what is now known as Bethune-Cookman College.
